What is the AVMA API?

The AVMA accredited veterinary colleges API exposes 1 endpoint — list_accredited_colleges — returning all institutions listed on the AVMA Council on Education accreditation page across five accreditation categories. Each record includes the institution name, a category code and label (such as U.S., Canadian, or foreign accreditation status), the state/province/country region heading, and a website URL where available. Pagination is supported via limit and offset parameters.

Returns the institutions listed on the AVMA accredited veterinary colleges page, one row per institution, sorted alphabetically (case-insensitive) by the institution name exactly as the page lists it, not by geography. All five page sections are included unless a category filter is supplied: U.S. accredited, provisionally accredited, letter-of-reasonable-assurance (not yet accredited; filter by category or status to exclude them), Canadian accredited, and accredited foreign colleges. Each row carries the section category, the state/province/country heading it sits under, the address line, phone, accreditation status text, initial accreditation date (where the page gives one), last and next evaluation years, SAVMA chapter flag, and the institution's website link (null when the page shows none). total_count is the count of institutions matching the filter across the whole page; the institutions array is one slice of that sorted list controlled by offset (default 0) and limit (default 5, maximum 200), with has_more indicating whether more rows follow. first_institution_name and first_institution_link always describe the alphabetically first institution of the whole filtered list regardless of offset. One page fetch per call; an unrecognized category value returns a 422 input error.

About the AVMA API

What the API Returns

The list_accredited_colleges endpoint returns every institution listed on the AVMA accredited veterinary colleges page. Results are sorted alphabetically (case-insensitive) by institution name across all five page sections: U.S. accredited, Canadian accredited, provisionally accredited, letter-of-reasonable-assurance, and foreign institutions. Each row in the institutions array includes the name field (exactly as it appears on the source page), a category code, a category_label matching the page section heading, and a region value reflecting the state, province, or country sub-heading under which the institution is listed.

Filtering and Pagination

The category parameter lets you restrict results to a single accreditation section. Omitting it returns all sections combined. The limit parameter controls how many rows are returned per call; values above 200 are clamped to 200. The offset parameter sets the zero-based starting position in the sorted list. The response includes total_count (total institutions matching the filter), has_more (whether rows follow the current slice), and convenience fields first_institution_name and first_institution_link identifying the alphabetically first institution in the filtered result set.

Coverage Scope

The API covers all five accreditation status categories represented on the AVMA page. The category_label field distinguishes them precisely, so you can differentiate a fully accredited U.S. program from one holding a letter of reasonable assurance or a provisional status. Website URLs are returned in first_institution_link where the source page lists them, and may be null for institutions without a listed URL.

Reliability & maintenanceVerified

The AVMA API is a managed, monitored endpoint for avma.org — not a raw scraper you maintain. Every endpoint is automatically health-checked on a schedule, and when avma.org changes and a check fails, the API is automatically queued for repair and re-verified. It is built to keep working as the site underneath it changes.

This isn't an official avma.org API — it's an independent, maintained REST wrapper over public data. Where the source has no official API (or only a limited one), Parse gives you a stable contract over a source that never promised one, and keeps it current. Need a new endpoint or field? You can revise it yourself in plain English and the agent rebuilds it against the live site in minutes — contributing the change back to the shared API is free.

Monitored & self-healing
Will this API break when the source site changes?+
It's built not to. Every endpoint is health-checked on a schedule with automated test probes. When the source site changes and a check fails, the API is automatically queued for repair and re-verified — that's the self-healing layer. Each API page shows when its endpoints were last verified. And because marketplace APIs are shared, any fix reaches everyone using it.
Is this an official API from the source site?+
No — Parse APIs are independent, managed REST wrappers over publicly available data. That is the point: where a site has no official API (or only a limited one), Parse gives you a maintained, monitored endpoint for that data and keeps it working as the site changes — so you get a stable contract over a source that never promised one.
Can I fix or extend this API myself if I need a new endpoint or field?+
Yes — and you don't have to wait on us. This API was generated by the Parse agent, which stays attached. Describe the change in plain English ("add an endpoint that returns reviews", "fix the price field") in the revise box on the API page or via the revise_api MCP tool, and the agent rebuilds it against the live site in minutes. Contributing the change back to the public API is free.
What happens if I call an endpoint that has an issue?+
Errors are machine-readable: a bad call returns a clean status with the list of available endpoints and a repair hint, so an agent (or you) can recover or trigger a fix instead of failing silently. Confirmed failures feed the automatic repair queue.
Common use cases
  • Build a directory of AVMA-accredited veterinary schools filtered by U.S. or Canadian accreditation category.
  • Monitor changes to provisional or letter-of-reasonable-assurance institutions over time by comparing total_count per category.
  • Populate a veterinary school search tool with institution names, regions, and official website links.
  • Generate a ranked list of foreign-accredited veterinary colleges for international applicants.
  • Cross-reference AVMA accreditation status against other veterinary licensing datasets using institution names.
  • Feed accreditation data into a credentialing verification workflow for veterinary employers or licensing boards.

Frequently asked questions
Does AVMA have an official developer API for accreditation data?+
AVMA does not publish a public developer API for its accredited colleges directory. The data is presented as a structured webpage at avma.org/education/center-for-veterinary-accreditation/accredited-veterinary-colleges.
What does the `category` filter parameter accept, and what sections does it cover?+
The category parameter accepts a code corresponding to one of the five sections on the AVMA page: U.S. accredited colleges, Canadian accredited colleges, provisionally accredited colleges, colleges with a letter of reasonable assurance, and foreign accredited institutions. Omitting the parameter returns institutions from all five sections in a single alphabetically sorted list.
Are accreditation expiration dates or full accreditation history included in the response?+
Not currently. The API returns institution name, accreditation category, region, and website URL as listed on the AVMA page; it does not include accreditation dates, review cycles, or historical status changes. You can fork this API on Parse and revise it to add an endpoint targeting supplementary AVMA accreditation documents if that data becomes available.
How are institutions sorted, and can I sort by region instead?+
Results are always sorted alphabetically by institution name, case-insensitive, as specified by the endpoint. Region-based sorting is not a built-in parameter. The region field is returned per row, so client-side sorting by state, province, or country is straightforward. If server-side region sorting is important for your use case, you can fork this API on Parse and revise the endpoint to support a sort_by parameter.
What happens when an institution has no website listed on the AVMA page?+
The first_institution_link field returns null when the AVMA page does not list a URL for that institution. The institution still appears in the institutions array with all other available fields populated.
